Mentoring

Mentoring plays an important role in supporting learning and development. Whilst in education, mentoring involves pairing young people with an older peer or volunteer, who acts as a positive role model. In general, mentoring aims to build confidence, develop resilience and character, or raise aspirations, rather than to develop specific academic skills or knowledge (but these of course, are often encouraged indirectly through mentoring)(4).

Research has found that mentoring is significantly related to positive attitudes towards the activity the mentee engages in with their mentor; positive health-related benefits from where a mentor can oversee a young person’s well being, they can challenge a mentee’s negative self views, thus enhance self-confidence; further interpersonal skills development by promoting positive relationships; positive motivational outcomes where mentee’s are exposed to more educational and social opportunities, helping them to seek out new experiences. Additionally, mentees can gain motivation from personally setting goals with the help of their mentor and reviewing their achievements; and finally, career outcomes (5). Accordingly, reviews of academic mentoring found an association between mentoring and both career and employment outcomes (6).

At Beards & Books, we hope through our mentoring service, to assist you in planning your goals for the future, encourage a positive mindset in achieving your goals and providing help in overcoming the obstacles to reaching for these goals.
